II. Introduction

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain.
When Jesus sat down, his disciples came to him.
Then Jesus opened His mouth and taught them.
Let me ask us this question:
Who did Jesus teach?
God’s Word says two groups of people were present for this teaching.
The crowds are present, but they are distant.
Seeing the crowds, Jesus “went up the mountain.”
The disciples are present, but they are near.
For “his disciples came to him.”
So who did Jesus teach?
Did Jesus teach the crowds?

A. Blessed are the poor in spirit (5:3)

Matthew 5:3 ESV
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Or did Jesus teach the disciples?
Matthew 5:3 RVA 2015
Or did Jesus teach both?
We cannot say for certain.
But what does God’s Word want us to see here?
God’s Word wants us to see that when Jesus taught about the kingdom of heaven,
One group was near to Jesus, and one group was far from Jesus.
The key to understanding the kingdom of heaven is Jesus!
Brothers and sisters, we cannot understand the teaching of Jesus without being near to Jesus!
Who hears better?
Who understands what is said?
Ephesians 1:3 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
Ephesians 1:3 RVA 2015
Is it the people who are far away?
Or, is it the people who are near?
People hear better when they are near!
Matthew 5:3 ESV
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
God’s Word wants us to see who are near to Jesus when he teaches.
Matthew 5:3 RVA 2015
The disciples are near.
And by the grace of God, we may draw near too.
Jesus is teaching about the kingdom of God.
The kingdom of God is not for everyone.
Many will hear about it, but few will enter into it.
Only those who are near to Jesus will enter the kingdom of heaven.
And by the grace of God, we may draw near to Jesus today!
How close are you to Jesus?
Do you follow Jesus from a distance?
With the crowds?
Or are you a follower of Jesus who is close to Him?
Ephesians 1:3 ESV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
A disciple?
Matthew 5:3 ESV
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Just as the mountains are high above the earth, the kingdom of heaven is not like the kingdoms of this world.
This world does not know God.

B. Blessed are those who mourn (5:4)

Matthew 5:4 ESV
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
This world does not submit to God’s will or God’s ways.
Matthew 5:4 RVA 2015
We cannot be content in the crowd, but we can be happy in Jesus.
The Gospel invites us to come out of the crowd, and follow close to Jesus.
Isaiah 61:1–2 ESV
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;
The Gospel teaches us what it means to be blessed in the kingdom of our Lord.
Come to Jesus.
Submit to Jesus.
Hear from Jesus — the king of heaven!

A. Introduction to Theme

What is the first word Jesus speaks in this teaching?
This is an important word.
2 Corinthians 7:10 ESV
For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
2 Corinthians 7:10 RVA 2015
It is the word: “Blessed” (v.3)
Bienaventurados!
Let us think about what this word is, and what this word is not.
This word “Blessed” is not a word to condemn.
John 3:17 ESV
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
John 3:17 RVA 2015
Have we failed God?
Matthew 5:4 ESV
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

C. Blessed are the meek (5:5)

Have we fallen short of his glory?
Matthew 5:5 ESV
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Have we sinned?
Matthew 5:5 RVA 2015
Jesus is not saying “stay away.”
This word is not a word to condemn.
Neither is this word “Blessed” a word to command.
Our Lord is not giving more commandments.
"Do this” or “don’t do that.”
Matthew 11:29–30 ESV
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
There is nothing that a person can do to earn a place in God’s kingdom — Nothing!
Matthew 11:29 ESV
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:29 RVA 2015
Matthew 11:30 ESV
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:30 RVA 2015
There is nothing we can give to God.
This teaching is about what God gives, not us.
There is nothing we can do for God.
This teaching is about what God does, not us.
This is not a commandment.
But instead our Lord says — “Blessed are.”
Matthew 5:5 ESV
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
This word celebrates what already is.
This is a fact. This word “Blessed” is an adjective.
Jesus describes those who are already blessed, just as they are.
Brothers and sisters —
We should not be afraid of this word “Blessed.”
Matthew 5:6 ESV
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Matthew 5:6 RVA 2015
Matthew 5:7 ESV
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
Matthew 5:7 RVA 2015
7 “Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque ellos recibirán misericordia.
Matthew 5:8 ESV
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Matthew 5:8 RVA 2015
Matthew 5:9 ESV
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Matthew 5:9 RVA 2015
Matthew 5:6–9 ESV
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Some preachers abuse this word.
Some preachers condition this word.
They offer us promises of prosperity that Jesus never gave .
Matthew 7:12 ESV
12 “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Matthew 7:12 RVA 2015
But Jesus repeats this word “Blessed” nine times.
1 John 1:9 ESV
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9 RVA 2015
And nine times it is the first word.
Because the blessing of Jesus starts with Jesus, not with us nor what we do.
This is who Jesus calls “Blessed.”
Those who belong to the kingdom of heaven will act like it!

III. Exposition

In Verse 3, Jesus says —

A. Blessed are the poor in spirit (5:3)

Matthew 5:3 ESV
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:3 RVA 2015
What does it mean to be “poor” in spirit?
To be “poor” means to have little, or not enough.
Someone who is poor is dependent upon others for what they need.
To be “poor in spirit” means that the spirit is poor.
Matthew 7:12 ESV
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
The spirit is dependent on someone else.
"Poor in spirit” means trusting Jesus for all that we need.
1 John 1:9 ESV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
We may not have what we want in the body, but praise God we have everything we need in the spirit!
Our sins are forgiven in Jesus!
Every spiritual blessings is ours in heaven!
Ephesians 1:3 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
Ephesians 1:3 RVA 2015
To the poor in spirit, Jesus gives a gift.
Colossians 1:19–20 ESV
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Matthew 5:3 ESV
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:3 RVA 2015
God’s Word does not say “theirs will be the kingdom” —but “theirs IS the kingdom.”
The poor in spirit are blessed now.
Matthew 5:10 ESV
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
They do not have to wait for the future.
Matthew 5:10 RVA 2015
Matthew 5:11 ESV
11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
Matthew 5:11 RVA 2015
Matthew 5:12 ESV
12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 5:12 RVA 2015
Those who are poor in spirit are blessed, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
And there is no lack in God’s kingdom.
Jesus continues:

B. Blessed are those who mourn (5:4)

Matthew 5:4 ESV
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Matthew 5:11–12 ESV
“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 5:4 RVA 2015
What does it mean to “mourn”?
It means to be sad.
It means to grieve.
The “Blessed” are those who mourn over the right things.
When our 50” TV breaks, we mourn.
When our sports team loses a game, we mourn.
There is no blessing in mourning over these things.
There is no comfort in mourning over things that will perish.
What about mourning over the things God mourns over?
What about mourning over sin?
What about mourning over those who do not know God?
What about mourning over those who refuse to trust Jesus, who will die in their sins, and spend forever in Hell?
Let us mourn for these things now while we can. Let us not mourn like the world mourns.
2 Corinthians 7:10 ESV
10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
2 Corinthians 7:10 RVA 2015
Those who mourn now will be comforted.
Because after the world passes away, the kingdom of heaven will remain.
Jesus continues —

C. Blessed are the meek (5:5)

Matthew 5:5 ESV
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:5 RVA 2015
The meek are blessed.
What does it mean to be meek?
A person who is meek may be an important person.
They may be a powerful person.
They may be a wealthy person!
But they are not a prideful person. (BDAG)
Meekness is strength under control. (QT)
A powerful animal has strength to pull a cart, but that strength is humbled and controlled by a yoke.
Jesus said:
Matthew 11:29 ESV
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:29 RVA 2015
Jesus said:
Matthew 11:30 ESV
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:30 RVA 2015
We become meek when we learn from Jesus and follow him.
We like to take things we want by force.
We overpower the weak.
We go to war.
But Jesus shows us what it means to be meek.
Jesus left the glory of Heaven and became a man, walking on dirt.
On the cross, Jesus could have called legions of angels to save him, but he did not, choosing instead to obey His Father unto death.
That is meekness. Strength under control.
And the meek shall inherit the earth.
Jesus continues with a focus on what a blessed person does —

D. Conduct (5:6-9)

Look with me at verses 6-9.
Matthew 5:6 ESV
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Matthew 5:6 RVA 2015
Matthew 5:7 ESV
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
Matthew 5:7 RVA 2015
7 “Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque ellos recibirán misericordia.
Matthew 5:8 ESV
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Matthew 5:8 RVA 2015
Matthew 5:9 ESV
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Matthew 5:9 RVA 2015
Remember, these are not commands.
These are not things we do in order to be blessed.
These are descriptions of what those who are already blessed do.
How do we see if a person is righteous?
I see their righteous works.
How do we see if a person is merciful?
Those who have received mercy, show mercy.
Jesus taught -
Matthew 7:12 ESV
12 “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Matthew 7:12 RVA 2015
How do we see if a person has a pure heart or if they are a peace-maker?
Such a person will do pure and peaceful things, because sin is not in the heart.
1 John 1:9 ESV
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9 RVA 2015
A person’s conduct represents a person’s character.
The blessed, are a blessing.
Those who belong to the kingdom of heaven will act like it!
Because God has acted in these ways toward us in Jesus.
God made us righteous, God showed us mercy, God revealed Himself in Jesus, and God adopted us as His own.
This is why the “Blessed” —
They will be satisfied.
They will receive mercy.
They will see God.
They will be called sons of God.
Because the “Blessed” belong to God through Jesus Christ. The “Blessed” have been born-again and have received a new heart and a new life.
Jesus saves the most difficult words for the end.
This is why the word “Blessed” does not guarantee you will prosper in this world.

E. (5:10-12)

Look with me at what Jesus taught, in verses 10-12.
These verses focus not on what the blessed do, but what is done to them.
Matthew 5:10 ESV
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Who wants to follow Jesus now?
Who wants to be near to him now?
To be reviled, to be persecuted, to have all kinds of evil uttered against you falsely - all because of Jesus!
Do you understand why many stay in the crowd, at a distance?
Many are not willing to pay the price to follow Jesus.
Many are not willing to turn away from their sin and comforts of the world to be near to Jesus.
Following Jesus is not easy. Being near to Jesus will require sacrifice.
But the “Blessed” rejoice and are glad. For the “Blessed” are looking to a great reward that is stored up for them not in this world, but in heaven!

IV. Conclusion

A. Gospel Proclamation

Jesus teaches that the kingdom of heaven is not like the kingdoms of this world.
So how do we enter into the kingdom of heaven?
The answer is through Jesus, and Jesus alone!
Jesus brings heaven near by his cross, burial and resurrection.
Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and on the third day was raised.
So that all who confess with the mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in the heart that God raised Him from the dead, will be saved.
The Gospel promises that we will be made like Jesus.
Poor in spirit.
Mourners.
Meek.
Hungering and Thirsting for Righteousness.
Merciful.
Pure in Heart.
Peacemakers.
Persecuted for Righteousness’ sake.
Come to Jesus. Stay close to Him.
This is what it means to be blessed.
Amen.
